What is post-editing?

Post-editing is the process by which a human translator reviews and edits a machine translation. Since machine translations often have a lot of imperfections and misinterpretations, post-editing increases the fluency and use of proper language conventions of the machine translation.

What is its purpose?

Please note that machine translations, even after having gone through post-editing, are NEVER an equal replacement for genuine human translations. Machine translations will always lack genuine comprehension of context, nuances, regional differences, and proper language conventions. The process of post-editing merely ensures a closer match to a genuine translation for situations in which human translation is impractical, usually do to time or cost constraints. Even after having been reviewed, the machine translation will still have inaccuracies or breaks in context or fluency due to the fact that the human translator is merely working with what was already given and isn't starting from scratch.​
