What are transcription services?

Transcription is the process of converting audio and speech into a written account. Transcribers have to listen closely and write down everything a person or an audio says in order to have a word for word account. You can transcribe an audio, the audio from a video, or even a live person's speech in real time. Transcriptions are used to record a written account of something that was said, normally to make it easier and quicker to review and cross reference, for example with court hearings.

Is transcription the same as translation?

No, transcription is NOT the same as translation. Transcribing is taking something that is spoken and taking it down in written form. Translation, on the other hand, is the process of taking written content from one language and converting it into another written language. There are times, however, when it is necessary to transcribe and translate an audio. We can help in these cases and kill two birds with one stone! While regular transcription is $1.25 per audio minute, transcription with translation is $5.50 per audio minute.

Transcription, Subtitles, and Closed Captions

Transcriptions are word-for-word accounts of something that is spoken or recorded. Subtitles are translations of recorded audio for videos and movies intended for viewers who don't speak or can't understand the spoken language. Subtitles tend to not be direct, word-for-word translations of the spoken words; rather, they express the main idea of what is being said in a different language. Closed Captions are aids for the hearing impaired, who cannot hear the audio of a video or movie. They also are not necessarily word-for-word transcriptions of what is being spoken, often summing things up to get across the main idea, especially when speech is fast. Closed Captions, in addition, describe all of the sounds that can be heard, since the hearing impaired can't perceive any of the sounds. These sounds include, but aren't limited to: music, coughing, sneezing, animal sounds, weather sounds, sound effects, footsteps, etc.

Can I use machine transcribers?

While machine transcribers are an option, they are very limited in their ability to pick up on subtle and rapid speech, especially if the audio quality is poor. Only a human transcriptionist can listen closely and discern everything that is being said, using context clues if some things are difficult to understand.
